Hemoglobin (Hb) variants - Structure and Functions

Description

Hemoglobin (Hb) variants are different forms of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen. They can be either normal or abnormal, and there are hundreds of variant forms. Some common abnormal Hb variants include HbS (Sickle Cell), HbE, HbC, and HbD. Normal Hb types include HbA (95-98% in adults), HbA2 (2-3% in adults), and HbF (up to 2.5% in adults, primarily produced in fetal red blood cells).
